Increase in Parking Charges – Net Zero 2030 Parking Strategy

The council agreed proposals at this week’s cabinet meeting (on 7th October) to increase parking charges based on a schedule of emissions, such that drivers of more polluting cars will pay more. Their proposals also now include a basic rate for electric vehicles which were previously zero rated.
In addition to variable rates for on street per hour parking the paper also includes a tiered basis for charging for residents parking.
These increases follow a period of more than 10 years during which parking charges have not been increased.
BRA has made representations to the council expressing concerns about a number of aspects of the proposals, particularly related to the potential impact on businesses, differential charges proposed to be applied to vehicles parked by residents outside their homes when not being used and that electric vehicles will now face charges which could discourage more residents from switching away from petrol or diesel.
We understand that these proposals will be subject to a consultation process prior to being introduced. Once we have details of this we will advise residents further.
