On Saturday we were supposed to officially wave goodbye to the winter blues and warmly welcome the arrival of Spring. Well, that’s the theory anyway. However, in reality in this country, the first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.
For instance, it’s not unusual to count numerous kinds of weather inside 24 hours in Spring. And there are days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.
This is certainly true in my part of Brackenbury where the wind whistles down the corridor that is Beadon Road at umbrella breaking speed. But for all that, the Cherry Blossom opposite is beginning to stir itself and prepare for a truly picturesque cloak of blossom. And it is beginning to happen everywhere in Brackenbury. Just when you thought everything was grey and dead, miraculously everything pops up to begin to add colour to our lives.
For many people Spring is about getting back outdoors, taking weekend breaks and planning summer trips. For others it’s as Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying, Let’s Party.
Personally for me, the true harbinger of Spring is not crocuses, daffodils and swallows, but the sound of willow on leather on a cold blustery day at Lord’s. Also for me, Spring is the Spike Milligan couplet:
Spring is sprung, the grass is ris
I wonder where the birdies is.
Happy Easter.
