Cut down on the sugar in Hammersmith and Fulham

H&F residents are being encouraged to boost their health by cutting down on sugar.

Change4Life’s Sugar Smart campaign launched earlier this month and is backed by Hammersmith & Fulham Council to encourage healthy lifestyle choices for residents.

The campaign aims to help parents and consumers become more aware of the high levels of sugars that can be hidden in every day foods and how to swap them for healthier choices.

“Too much sugar can lead to tooth decay, weight gain, Type 2 diabetes and some cancers so we support this campaign to help our residents swap out sugar-rich foods for healthier options,” said Cllr Vivienne Lukey, H&F Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care.

Children in particular may be unaware of the high volumes of sugar they could be consuming – for example, a can of fizzy cola drink can contain the equivalent of nine sugar cubes.

To help families cut down on the sweet stuff, the Sugar Smart website gives advice and ideas for how to cut back on sugary products, how to use smaller portions and suggests alternative foods to swap with.

There is even a selection of healthy recipes to help reduce sugars in your home cooking.

H&F also runs a series of healthy lifestyle sessions for children and families. Details of the sessions can be found here.
