Bins and fines for fly tipping
The roll out of the bins has now taken place and Brendan Smith our Streetscene Coordinator who was in contact with the Council over the roll out comments as follows:
Food Bins– Some people have complained that Food Bins have been hung on front railings after collections. I have referred this to the council who have said this is unacceptable and they will speak to the contractors about this.
Bin Rollout – There may be an opportunity to review this with the council now that the rollout is complete. However, we have actually received hardly any complaints from residents or significant issues of concern raised and it would appear that the Council have been true to their word in giving people choices and dealing with their individual needs. Of course, some people will never be happy that there are new bins around the area and will always see them as a blight.
In response to questions I have raised about some of the operational issues I had picked up the council (Pat Cosgrave) has said:
We are working constantly with the contractor and closely monitoring container returns and trying to ensure there are no containers on pavements, on railings, or blocking egress post collection and so forth. Where there are some issues that have been identified around presentation points we are ensuring that the crews and supervisors are feeding that back to us so we are able to engage with residents where there may be may presentation issues.
I feel that in the vast majority of circumstances the service is running relatively smoothly. But we’re sincere in our commitment to continuing to work with residents post collection to resolve any issues that arise and will continue to do so.
I absolutely agree that the food waste caddies should not be returned hung on railings and should be returned to within the curtilage of the property they were collected from. I will be raising this matter with the contract manager and collections manager when I meet with them tomorrow. I am sorry this has happened and I appreciate you raising it with me.
With regard to a service for the collection of small electrical items and similar, we are having some internal discussions about options to assist with the collection of these so I welcome the comments you have provided on that matter.
As to the matter of the garden waste collection service, I know that you appreciate that when the council is implementing an entirely new service that it is a fine balance to try and develop a service that will hopefully suit the majority of residents and reflect the wider make-up of the borough. However, again we appreciate your comments, and as with any new service we will review the implementation of it and take on board service user feedback.
